Our First-Year Writing program, which is a component of the Institute for Core Studies, is connected by a shared set of program learning objectives. However, all faculty are invited to create subthemes for their individual courses; students are then made aware of those subthemes prior to the start of the semester, and are encouraged to sign up for sections of ENG 1000c with themes that interest them. Consequently, even though our writing program shares a number of expectations--a minimum number of pages of writing produced every week, required student conferences, mandatory final portfolio, etc.--there is also a lot of thematic variation that runs throughout the curriculum.

To the left you'll find the first-year writing faculty whose students are represented in this journal. These notes from our faculty will provide some context and insight into the assignments behind their students' submissions.
