What is a Rubric?

A rubric is an explicit set of criteria used for assessing a particular type of work or performance.

  • Rubrics consist of content to be graded, criteria, and, values.

  • Rubrics can be general (ex: a writing rubric, critical thinking rubric) or specific to an assignment (ex: website design rubric).

  • Rubrics give detailed information about how a students will be graded.

  • Rubrics should be reviewed with students before they start am assignment.

  • They usually add up to a certain value.

  • If a rubric is clear and explicit then that cuts down on questions and arguments about grades.
