My Political Aspirations:
The power of women coming together to form a political movement is a movement that continues today and was started many years ago by women who challenged the status quo and challenged women’s place in government. I want to be part of that movement. For me, it is so humbling to be here present among all the women in the room who have years of experience empowering women and engaging them in opportunities to lead, and to progress gender equity.
I believe that women of all backgrounds and experiences should run for public office: mothers, caregivers, teachers, scientist, and young girls should be given the platform to be able to become a viable candidate. Women like me who want to advocate and better represent their people, their neighborhoods and districts. I have learned about many organizations that support this movement: Amplify her, Eleanor’s legacy, Ignite National, among other organizations like this one who have different services that all benefit the training of women who want to run just as they are. Women who do not have political background or wealth to run a campaign but have the courage, team spirit, and are willing to work hard to get a seat at the table.
We have to increase the number of women in congress, and in NYC Council. I want to get involved in reaching that goal. I believe that I can run for a position in this organization where my job would include recruiting, training and inspiring other women in NY to raise their hand and say “Yes, I will Run”.
I may be a newcomer in politics but I am anything but new to public service. I served two years as an Americorps member with the American Red Cross where with a group of eleven members we installed over 50,000 smoke alarms and provided fire safety education to more than 20,000 families. I also led the Pillowcase Project Red Cross program which is a Preparedness program for 3rd-5th graders in NYC public schools. We trained over 15,000 youth in the Pillowcase Project.
