A young Cherokee boy moves in with his grandparents during the Depression era. They teach him about living in the mountains: how to catch animals, as well as listen to them. His grandparents teach him about words, history, and policicians from borrowed library books. He encounters loss, poverty, and discrimination. It is written in the voice of a young boy and incoporates Indian vernacular and rural mountain 1930's dialect.
