Garmin GPS Exercise

I have been familiar with Garmin GPS as a consumer GPS for mapping out routes while driving, however I have not used it for other purposes. This time I did not get a chance to use the professional geographical one, however I gained much information about it from my coursemates.

From obtaining the waypoint data from the Garmin devices and configuring them into ARCGIS simply using a .txt file one can layer information about different features. For this exercise different structures on St. John's campus such as benches, light fixtures, emergency response poles, and trashcans were used.

The professional Garmin GPS is different from a commercial one as it offers more accuracy in mapping, a compass, and layered base map information lthat display things like contour interval. On the commercial Garmin GPS one can favorite places, but one cannot add comments and extra descriptions about the physical location or features of mapped places like the professional Garmin device can.

In the future I find myself using a Garmin handheld GPS if I were going on a hiking trip in St. Vincent and wanted to map the new plant species arising around the dormant volcanoe.
