Minority Populations

For this assignment we used ArcGis to create visualizations for 2010 minority population data provided by the U.S. Census Bureau. We then mapped it in an Esri Storymap.

Setting the attributes confused me at first. Then I realized that we had to choose a minority that was divided by the population from 2010. And that the two range points that were set were more than and less than and it should be set at less than 0 and greater than 20% of 2010 population for the county as the breakpoint. It was hard to adjust it to the directions at first before doing that. Just changing the dials can give you many problems if you are not sure of the intent of the why. I learned of the importance of each part such as the divided by which shows the population via spatial density format.

Surprisingly the dominant minority in Hawaii is not Pacific Islanders, as this map showed it is the Asians and Hispanics that have come over. I knew that the amount of Asians, especially Japanese, was high in Hawaii, but the Hispanic part was surprising. The Pacific Islander population was much smaller than previously thought. The majority population for this once independent island nation turned commercial paradise is white.

One thing that confused me during this assignment was assigning attibutes for the population of Native Americans, the count of 78,329 in 2010 was different from the count of 5.2 million according to the US. Census bureau total number. I wondered if this had to do with the fact that we used the AMERI_ES name to map them. The Native American population actually was very prominent in Alaska though. What surprised me more was to see that the Asian populations were largest in areas of indigenous American populations like Amerindians and Hawaiians.

Minority Majority Areas

It was interesting to be able to defijnitevly use ARCGIS to map out where the minority majorities, over 50% of a minority are located. This was interesting information wherein the size of the minority and distribution per county was represented by the size of the orange dot. This proved an educational tool to use for other situations where density needs to be mapped.

This map is something that I would find most useful for marketing groups targeting minorities and politicians to use so that they may observe how to push their campaigns better. It also offers a way to associate other attributes such as economic status and reforms to a specific people.
