e-Portfolio: The Basics
What is an e-Portfolio?
An e-Portfolio is your own personal website where you can highlight your goals, ideas, and achievements. You can upload samples of work from your courses, images of your interests and activities, video and audio, and your own creative writing.
Why create an e-Portfolio?
Many reasons:
- To document and showcase all you do
- To be aware of all your accomplishments
- To organize and “curate” your work
- To give yourself an advantage in the job market
The CUNY website describes different types of e-Portfolios:
Course e-Portfolio
An ePortfolio required by the course instructor. Your instructor may provide you with a template or you can start from scratch.
Academic e-Portfolio
A working ePortfolioto archive workcompleted on thelearning journey.
Showcase e-Portfolio
An opportunity to showcase successes from your learning journey or a large project such as the Senior Thesis.

Getting Started
Go to stjohns.digication.com
Enter your email user name and then your SJC password (if that fails then click on forgot password)
If you are enrolled in a course then click on the course link and do the following:
Click on the "people" tab and scroll down to find your name. Click on your name and click on “create new e-Portfolio”
If you are not enrolled in a course you can simply click on “create e-Portfolio”
Give your e-Portfolio a title
Choose a Template (Create from Scratch is recommended)
Select your permissions
Select Tags
Click on Create
Please Note: You can customize your theme after you create your ePortfolio by navigating to Portfolio Tools>Settings.
To customize your theme, click the Customize button.
This will expand to Customize Theme drop down menu
Through the customize theme settings you will be able to change your header image as well as your directory image and footer. You can also modify the look and layout of your ePortfolio though CSS (though we don’t recommend that students do this unless they are familiar with CSS).
Always SAVE your changes
Creating Sections
Click on Add/Edit in the Section Section and create categories. Give some thought to this, but also know that you can always make changes.
Some Suggestions: Courses, Assignments, Clubs, Writing Samples, Image Samples, Freshman Year, Sophomore Year, Service, Hobbies, Work Experience, Resume, etc.
Within each section you can have sub-sections called “pages”. For each section click on add/edit page and create whatever subdivisions you wish to have.
Note: Even if you have pages within a section, each section will have a home page that you may want to add content to, e.g. an introduction to that section and an image(s).
Adding content through Modules
All uploaded files, images, video, etc., plus all material that is copied and pasted is add through “Modules”
There are four types:
Image/Audio/Video Module: Full screen version
Rich Text Module: For writing directly, copying and pasting, or inserting files or media
Gallery Module: For multiple images shown as thumbnails with one interchangeable expanded image
Contact Module: a template for providing your information
Choose the module that is best suited to the particular material you wish to add to your e-Portfolio.
Important:
Save and Publish whenever you make any changes.
Publish All is a shortcut to save all changes.
Submitting work though e-Portfolio:
Create a section for assignments
Create a page for each assignment
Add a rich text module to that page
Copy and Paste your paper or insert it as a file
Save and publish
Click on the "Porfolio Tools" tab on upper right
Click on submit and follow the prompts
Posting your photo to your "people" page
If you click on your name at the top of your page where it says Welcome, your profile will open.
In your profile, under Image, you may choose a picture that will then display in your courses "People" tab (in your profile you will also need to select "Show my image to other users in the system".) Once you have chosen the file and selected "Show my image", click Save at the bottom of the page.
