DIRECTIONS FOR CREATING YOUR ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO WHERE YOU WILL POST YOUR WORK IN THIS CLASS.

In this class you will post your work on what is called an electronic portfolio. You may have heard that word portfolio before and even kept on in a previous English class. For example, sometimes students will collect their work in a manilla folder or a 3-ring binder and that is a portfolio. If you were a graphic designer, an architect, or a photographer, you would have a portfolio that featured your best work.

Here in the year 2017, these portfolios are usually electronic. St. John's University pays a company called Digication to host electronic portfolios such as the one you are reading now. As a student at St. John's, you have the ability to create as many of these portfolios (you could think of them as your own personal website) as you like. For example, maybe you are in a club or work for a nonprofit that might like to have a website. As I understand it, if you graduate from St. John's, you are able to continue to access and create electronic portfolios as long as St. John's continues to work with the company Digication.

In education, electronic portfolios are called ePorts. Now it's time to create your ePort for this class.

You might want to print these directions out so you don’t have to do so much clicking back and forth between this page and the Digication page where you will set up your ePort.

If you need help, email me, Bill Torgerson, at <torgersw@stjohns.edu>

  1. Click on the link to St. John’s Digication page. https://stjohns.digication.com/home_guest.digi?sid=4675&cid=0&tid=0&pid=0&
  2. Watch the tutorial video about logging in and out on the right-hand side of the screen. Keep in mind you will create your ePort from scratch AND NOT use one of the ready-made templates.
  3. Your user name is everything before the (@stjohns.edu) of your SJU email. Your password is usually your six digit birthday. So if you were born July 10, 1985, this would be your password:  071085.
  4. If your password doesn’t work, click on the “forgot your password” and go through the process of getting a new password.
  5. If you seem to not have an account, write me Professor Torgerson at torgersw@stjohns.edu. I can check to see if you have an account and request one for you if for some reason you don’t have one. Sometimes very new students or transfer students do not yet have an account.
  6. Once you are logged in, you can take a look at some of the portfolios from the students who were in some of my classes during previous semesters. They had different assignments than you will have, but you will get an idea of the sort of digital text (website) we will be making. The ePort will look plain when you get started, but eventually they will look something like these:  Emily, Lina, and Blake. (if you aren’t logged into Digication, you won’t be able to access the portfolios)
  7. Now we’re going to create your ePortfolio. On the Digication page (once you have logged in) click on the green button that says create on the right hand side of the page.
  8. Title your portfolio this way: Last Name, First Name. Comp with Prof Torg Summer 2017.
  9. Choose the option to “create from scratch.”
  10. If it’s okay with you, for the privacy settings I’d like for you to choose “Private within St. John’s University” or “Public.”
  11. Scroll down and allow “tagging,” “comments,” and “show comments.”  Click on “Create New e-Portfolio.”
  12. Now you are going to add all the sections you will need this semester on your ePortfolio. In addition to the “Home” section that is already there, add "About Me",  “I Search Final Draft” and "Assignments."
  13. To begin to add a section, (not a module) click on the “Edit” button at the top left-hand side of the page.
  14. Do you see “view sections” below the big edit button at the top?  There is a different “add/edit” button next to it. Click on that.
  15. Do you see the green + sign and the “add section”? Click on that.
  16. You have additional sections to add in addition to the “Home” that is already there. Add the "About Me", "I Search Final Draft", and "Assignments" sections.
  17. Each section needs a “module” into which you can put your content. So now let’s add the modules.
  18. Click on the “add a module” button.
  19. There are different kinds of modules: Basic, image/video, rich text, etc…  Make sure you click on “Rich Text.”
  20. Click on the green “add this module” button.
  21. A text box will pop up. (It doesn’t pop up instantly. Give it a couple of seconds.)
  22. In each module, just write, “Content Coming Soon,” or whatever else will show me that you are beginning to understand how to add the content.
  23. Click on the “save” check mark.
  24. Click on the “Publish this page.”
  25. Click on “Publish all changes.”
  26. Now you have to add a module for your other sections. Just repeat the process described above.
  27. Go to the top of your page and click on the “Published” tab.
  28. When you click on “Published” at the top, this lets you see your ePort the way everyone else will see it. You need to copy and paste the link in the web browser window into an email and send it to Prof. Torg. The link you sent Prof. Torg should end with the word “published.”
  29. Email Prof. Torg at <torgersw@stjohns.edu> with your link. I will add your ePort link to a class roster that has what will be our writing groups on it.
  30. Also, if you think there is a mistake in these directions, please let Prof. Torg know so that he can fix them. If you have suggestions for making the directions more clear, please share those as well.
